  • onaangepaste inlijstingen of montagesystemen
  • afgebroken decoratiestukken in lijsten
  • beschadigingen van verguldingen of kleurlagen op lijsten

Behandeling

What we do

At In-Finitas we treat paintings on canvas, panel, hardboard both antique and modern. Additionally we carry out frame restoration.

Restoration of paintings is a multidiscipline field that includes knowledge of art history, physics, basic chemical reactions and keeping up-to date with new developments. A successful restoration is a result of extensive research, careful scientific analysis and responsible interventions. The techniques and materials should be diligently documented in the accompanying restoration dossier.

At In-Finitas all work follows the ethical code of the profession and abides by the international conventions in the area of cultural heritage preservation set out by UNESCO.

Screening

In our atelier we apply a number of techniques, including microscopic analysis, observation under various light sources, UV fluorescence, macro photography and database search for background information. This together with identification of previous interventions and the reaction of the varnish and paint layer to solvents results in a unique treatment for each painting.

If required, paintings are sent for further investigation to a specialized laboratory.

Historical analysis and other research is compiled into restoration dossiers that are given to the owners to be always kept with the paintings.

What can be wrong with a painting:

  • Warping of the support due to changing temperature and RH
  • Loss of tension of the stretched canvas
  • Split joints in a panel
  • Yellowed varnish and surface dirt
  • Hazy appearance due to deterioration of a varnish layer
  • Mould and insect infestation
  • Water damage
  • Holes and tears
  • Damage due to previous restorations and over cleaning
  • Deteriorated retouches and fillings
  • Separated from each other supports and air bubbles due to a defective marouflage
  • Craquele and loss of paint due to bad adhesion between the paint layer and the support
  • Inadequate framing and mounting systems
  • Broken elements in a frame, loss of gilding and paint

Treatment

In order to preserve art objects for a long period of time regular check up and careful up keep of paintings is necessary. Based on preliminary research the best possible method for conservation can be identified for each painting.

The treatment can be limited to basic conservation aimed at stabilizing the current condition of the painting and preventing any future damage. This can include emergency response due to recent damage. Minor restoration interventions include surface cleaning or partial dilution of the varnish layer and re-stretching of the canvas.

Complete restoration of a painting may consist of strip-lining or re-lining or even a transposition of the paint layer onto a new support.
